We are all wrapped up on our end I believe. Test weight is on the road, and all the rigging gear items were picked up yesterday by UPS. I hope everything safely arrives back to you. At Adams Columbia Electric Cooperative (ACEC) we run a fleet of digger/derricks and when OSHA came out with the Cranes & Derricks in Construction Standard, we like others were wondering how to comply. Originally our understanding of the exemptions given to the utility industry allowed us to continue with day to day work without having to certify our operators. After the help of our national group, NRECA, we determined that some of the work we do, mainly new construction was not part of the exemption. We also own our substation and do new construction in those subs of which we had been using local crane operators for that work. Some of that work could have been done with our own crews and digger/derricks if we had been certified.

After looking around for ways to certify our operators we found Associated Training Services (ATS), who happen to be in our own backyard. ACEC has been able to work with ATS to set up training sessions allowing us to run all the crew though training to obtain the required certification.

Some of the crew were a little nervous/apprehensive about training and testing as most had been out of the classroom setting for some time. The trainers provided by ATS did a very good job preparing the crews for the testing and after the first 3 sessions of 6 operators each session only one test was failed. Along with the certifications received I, and the operators felt the additional knowledge obtained in the training will help them in being safer operators.

I am looking forward to working with ATS in the future for re-certifications and any new operators we may have that need the certification.

I wanted to reach out to let you know that our dept. had a really great experience overall. I’ve heard nothing but good things and praise, not to mention the guys who didn’t get to participate are wondering when they will be.
